TGWG History: Our First Website

I woke up one morning, thinking, ‘‘The old site is just as much a part of TGWG history as anything else.’’ That same day, I e-mailed Ray, asking if he’d be willing to write a brief description of how it all began.

Portions of the old site survive in the current one: the Kathy Flood monograph, and his highly-popular online scrapbook.

Ray wrote his pages in dark blue Comic Sans MS. It seemed only appropriate to display his words in what surely must be his favorite font.

I think we started it in 2000. I was just learning how to do web pages (I started the Hawthorne Players page shortly before that, and the ACT, Inc. page shortly after), and the board was very supportive.

It started small - just a page with the currect show, a cast list, and a list of upcoming shows. And kept it current, something that is sadly lacking on a lot of web pages. (I’m glad to see that the current webmaster also sees the importance of keeping a site up to date.) Then I started adding pictures of the current cast, a page devoted to auditions, one for the brick campaign and the sell-outs, and the Guild history Kathy Flood wrote.

When I started the online scrapbook, it was mostly pics from shows I had been in. I started asking around for shots from other shows - Colleen Backer & Deb Pazdera, among others, lent me some. Then I started digging through the cabinets of old production photos, scanning in any usuable photos I could find. For some, I had no idea what the show was, much less who was in them. I matched some of them up by comparing them to the framed pictures on the walls - like 1956’s Anastasia. Others I found a recognizable cast member, like Evelyn Baumann, and asked them to identify the other actors. Some I never found.
